Even the smallest vibrations can soften details. Nikon's powerful in-lens optical VR compensates for vibrationsāan effect equivalent to shooting at a shutter speed up to 5.5 stops* faster. When used with the Z 9, Synchro VR combines the in-lens and in-camera VR image stabilization systems for maximum results.
If that applies to you, I am happy to report that the 24-70mm f/4 S has practically no coma, as you can see from the sample image and crop below: Milky Way (with star tracker): NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S @ 24mm, ISO 64, 860 seconds, f/4.0. Upper-left 100% crop

Since Nikon gives it the S designation, I assume the Z-mount version will be much better, but it is still a 5x zoom and will be hard to compete against the modest 24-70mm/f4 S, in the range they overlap. Both versions (F and Z) of the 24-120mm/f4 have 77mm front filter thread, vs. 72mm for the 24-70mm/f4 S.
NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S @ 24mm, ISO 3200, 1/13, f/4.0. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S @ 45mm, ISO 64, 1/10, f/6.3. This is quite an impressive performance. The images above range from two to six stops of image stabilization performance compared to the standard ā1/focal lengthā rule.
